Lily Allen has revealed she sank into a deep depression following her separation from actor David Harbour.
In a new British Vogue profile published this week, the English pop star hinted at their split, referring to Harbour as her “ex-husband.” The pair tied the knot in 2020, two years after Allen finalized her divorce from her first husband, Sam Cooper, with whom she shares two daughters. While the details of her breakup with Harbour remain private, Allen opened up about how difficult that period was for her mentally and emotionally.
She shared that as her marriage began to unravel, her deteriorating mental health worsened her struggles with eating and nearly led her to relapse, more than five years after achieving sobriety.
“The feelings of despair that I was experiencing were so strong,” she said. “The last time I felt anything like that, drugs and alcohol were my escape, so it was excruciating to sit with those emotions and not turn to them.”
The 40-year-old ultimately checked herself into a residential treatment facility — a move she described as “progress,” especially after past experiences where she’d felt “held against her will” in similar settings.
“That’s strength,” Allen reflected. “I knew the feelings I was having were too overwhelming to handle on my own, and I thought, ‘I need some time away.’” She admitted that at her lowest point, she “wanted to die.”
Now preparing to release her fifth studio album, Allen said she’s “come a long way” and is deeply immersed in the “thick of recovery.”
Back in March, Lily Allen revealed on her Miss Me? podcast that she underwent breast augmentation following her split from David Harbour. Just two months earlier, she had confessed that she was “spiraling” as rumors of their breakup began circulating in the media.
“I just can’t focus on anything except the pain I’m feeling,” Allen told her co-host, Miquita Oliver.
