Mannie Fresh Says the Cash Money vs. No Limit Verzuz ‘Was Never a Battle’

On the latest episode of their new podcast, Still 400 – The Mannie & Juvie Show, Mannie Fresh and Juvenile opened up about the Cash Money vs. No Limit Verzuz showdown that took place.

Around the 5:30 mark of the podcast, Mannie—who represented Cash Money alongside Juvenile—explained that the internet twisted the narrative. “One of my things is the internet kind of did something, but the internet always does this; it turned it into a battle,” he said. “It was never a battle. It was us celebrating our music. It was us celebrating our catalog. Two powerhouses in New Orleans.”

Mannie admitted he would’ve preferred a southern location. Juvenile, on the other hand, made it clear he treated the whole thing like competition. “I won’t do it again, bro, ‘cause I was battling,” he said. “I’m always trying to win. If we was playing basketball? Very competitive. … And everybody know Slikk was at my neck all week talking about, ‘Juv, it’s all love right now, but when we get on that dog, I’m telling you.’ So I came with that attitude.”

Even though it was “all love” among everyone involved, Juvenile said he was locked in on winning and felt the crowd wasn’t the right fit. “I think we need a crowd that actually, you know, celebrate the music the way we love the music,” he said. He added that many people in attendance were not necessarily fans of the era or the rivalry, but I just felt like in New Orleans, on both of our home turfs, it would have been better served.”

Mannie and Juvenile weren’t alone in that sentiment. On Talk With Flee, Cam’ron also praised the event but said the audience didn’t grasp the moment’s significance.

“I thought it was real good, man,” Cam said. “The only problem I had with the Verzuz was the location, a lot of people didn’t realize what was actually happening. People didn’t even really know the magnitude of what was going on with that Verzuz.”

He added that hip-hop fans who didn’t grow up during the Cash Money vs. No Limit era couldn’t fully appreciate it—and that if the event had gone down in New Orleans or Texas, it would’ve “popped off.”
