Timothée Chalamet’s newest release is already setting new benchmarks for A24.
Directed by Josh Safdie, the sports dramedy Marty Supreme made a powerful debut over the Christmas holiday, landing the second-highest opening weekend in A24’s history and further solidifying Chalamet as one of today’s most reliable box office draws.
Box office figures show Marty Supreme earning $28.3 million domestically during its five-day opening run from Christmas Eve through Sunday. That haul put it just behind A24’s current record-holder, Civil War, according to Variety.
The strong showing is especially impressive considering the film’s reported $60–70 million budget, making it the most expensive project the indie studio has ever released. In less than a week, A24 managed to recoup nearly half of its investment—an uncommon achievement for an original, R-rated sports movie.
Chalamet stars as Marty Mauser, an ambitious and cocky table tennis phenom juggling hustle, ego, and self-discovery in 1950s New York City. The film boasts a standout supporting cast that includes Gwyneth Paltrow, Odessa A’zion, Tyler, The Creator, Fran Drescher, Kevin O’Leary, Abel Ferrara, and more.
Critics were quick to praise the film ahead of its release, with Marty Supreme securing a 95% score on Rotten Tomatoes.
The breakout debut arrived during a crowded holiday box office. James Cameron’s Avatar: Fire and Ash continued its strong run in its second weekend, while new releases like Anaconda and Song Sung Blue packed the schedule. Even so, Marty Supreme emerged as the most successful newcomer, fueled by glowing reviews, strong word-of-mouth, and Chalamet’s nonstop promotional push.
Casting director Jennifer Venditti shared insight into how Tyler, The Creator landed his standout role.
“Tyler is just, like, it’s timeless. He’s perfect for this era,” Venditti said. “In that scene, you know, when they’re in the car, I feel like Tyler, when you meet him, he is joy personified. And that scene, it’s like, that is him. I mean, that’s what you feel like when you’re around him.”
