An Alabama police chief has stepped down after being arrested in Nashville for allegedly assaulting a woman.
Collinsville Police Chief Stephen Malone was taken into custody in Nashville on Jan. 31 after reportedly going to the home of a woman he was dating and attacking her.
According to the victim, the two got into an argument over suspected infidelity. During the dispute, Malone allegedly began to “hammer strike the victim in the face with his closed fist” and later “grabbed her by the throat with his hand and slammed her down multiple times.”
Investigators said Malone was “initially uncooperative” when questioned about the incident, repeatedly claiming the victim was drunk, needed help, and that he didn’t want her to get in trouble.
He later agreed to speak with authorities and claimed that after he told her about the severity of her injuries, she attacked him and broke his necklace. He did not clearly explain how she sustained her injuries, though investigators noted he had scratches, which the victim said were in self-defense.
Malone has been charged with Aggravated Assault — Strangulation. His bond was set at $20,000, and he is scheduled to appear in court on Feb. 10.
