Doja Cat Reveals She’d Have Chosen Psychology If Not Music: “The Human Mind Is Just So Complex”

Doja Cat revealed that if music wasn’t her path, she would’ve pursued a career in psychology.

The 30-year-old rapper and singer opened up about her alternate career choice in her April cover story for Vogue.

“I think the human mind is just so complex and fascinating and beautiful and chaotic,” she shared.

She also got candid about her own journey with therapy, which she says began during the Scarlet album era, especially as she worked through her borderline personality disorder. “I’m not cured of anything. But it helps me understand why I do the things that I do.”

“I don’t know what I would’ve done without it or where l’d be without it,” she continued. “I’ve been able to see through a lot of the fog that I couldn’t see through before … I don’t want to be in a state of agony before a show.”

Doja added, “I don’t want to be exhausted. I don’t want to be unhealthy. And physically, mentally… I need all of the education I can get on how to do that.”

Therapy has also shifted how she approaches love, helping her feel more grounded in relationships and even allowing her to “[love] when they leave.”

“This is what therapy has done for me,” Doja said. “It’s allowed me to be away and be at peace without being like, ‘I need tarot cards. I need an answer. Text me.’ I don’t do any of that anymore. It’s very nice.”

The “Paint the Town Red” artist also recently addressed her “agonizing” experience with borderline personality disorder (BPD) in a TikTok, sparked by the backlash Chappell Roan faced for appearing uneasy during paparazzi and fan encounters.

“I am not diagnosing Chappell Roan with BPD,” she clarified. “I’m saying there’s a connection to the way people are treating her for showing her discomfort.”
