Mario Rodriguez Jr. Opens Up About Why He Continued Seeing Tyler Perry After Alleged Abuse

Mario Rodriguez Jr. is speaking out on one of the key questions tied to his lawsuit against Tyler Perry—why he stayed in contact with the director after the alleged incidents.

In a recently shared TikTok statement, Rodriguez explained that the answer isn’t simple, citing career aspirations, fear, and self-doubt as major influences behind his actions.

Mario Rodriguez Jr., who previously filed a lawsuit accusing Tyler Perry of sexual misconduct, said he wrestled with that same question for years. “Why did I keep going back there? That’s the same question I asked myself for so many years,” he shared.

He explained that each visit came with an internal struggle, as he tried to balance personal responsibilities with what he believed was a major career breakthrough. “I felt like my dream was coming true,” he said, adding that since he had already worked with Perry, he didn’t expect the alleged behavior to continue.

Rodriguez also pointed to power dynamics as a key factor in how he responded, describing a situation involving someone who was not just a mentor but also held influence over his career.

“When your abuser is your mentor… your boss… someone who holds the key to your career… you tell yourself it was just a one-time thing,” he said.

He noted that the continued contact was driven by hope that the behavior would stop, along with reassurances that followed each alleged incident.

In his statement, Rodriguez connected his experience to a broader pattern in how victims react to alleged abuse. “That question is the number one reason why victims don’t come forward,” he said, addressing the scrutiny around staying in contact. He added, “I didn’t have the perfect explanation… I’m tired of carrying that weight on my shoulders.”

The renewed focus on the case comes after previously reported text messages surfaced showing Rodriguez reaching out to Perry years after the alleged incidents, including messages expressing gratitude and opening up about personal struggles. Those messages, obtained by the Associated Press, have become a central point in the ongoing legal dispute.

Rodriguez’s lawsuit claims the alleged misconduct took place over an extended period following their initial professional relationship in the mid-2010s. He alleges that after landing a role in one of Perry’s films, he experienced ongoing unwanted advances tied to what he described as a significant power imbalance.

The case is still ongoing, with Perry denying the allegations and insisting that any interactions between them were consensual.

Rodriguez’s lawsuit is one of several legal challenges currently facing Perry. Actor Derek Dixon has also filed a separate suit accusing him of sexual harassment and assault related to his work on The Oval and Ruthless.

Both Rodriguez and Dixon are being represented by attorney Jonathan Delshad.
