DJ Dan, InStereo founder and a key figure in shaping West Coast house music, has passed away at 57

DJ Dan, the legendary producer and DJ who played a major role in shaping West Coast house music for over four decades, has passed away at the age of 57. A representative confirmed that the artist, born Daniel Wherrett, died on Sunday, March 29—just a day after missing a scheduled performance at Dead Ringer in Reno, Nevada.

As reported by Billboard, concern began to grow when DJ Dan failed to appear for his March 28 set at the Reno venue. Promoters later informed ticket holders that he would not be performing, while those close to him revealed he hadn’t responded to messages for two days. His sister, Dora King, later confirmed that he died on March 28 following what she described as a massive heart attack. An official cause of death has not been formally released.

In a statement confirming his passing, representatives shared that Daniel Wherrett believed his mission was “to heal through music.” They also highlighted his distinctive synesthetic style behind the decks, explaining how he connected different genres to colors and crafted his sets around “peaks and valleys of energy through color.”

Born in Lacey, Washington, in 1968, Wherrett initially moved to Seattle to study design and fashion before getting pulled into the city’s underground dance scene. By the early 1990s, he had made his way to Southern California as rave culture began booming across the West Coast. He later put down roots in San Francisco, where he became a founding member of the Funky Tekno Tribe collective and rose as a standout figure in the local underground electronic scene.

Over time, DJ Dan built a name that reached far beyond the club circuit. He delivered three acclaimed Essential Mix sessions for BBC Radio, including a 2007 set alongside Chicago house icon Frankie Knuckles at the Winter Music Conference.

That same creative vision helped cement DJ Dan as one of the most recognizable names in American dance music throughout the late ’90s and 2000s. He earned three spots on Billboard’s Dance Club Songs chart, including his No. 1 hit “That Phone Track” in 2004. His track “That Zipper Track” moved over 100,000 vinyl copies worldwide, while his 2011 album In Stereo climbed to No. 11 on Billboard’s Top Dance Albums chart. He also launched his own label, InStereo Recordings, in 2001.

DJ Dan’s impact spanned house, techno, breakbeat, and electro, consistently earning him recognition as one of the top DJs in the country. DJ Mag ranked him among the world’s leading DJs in 2006, while URB once crowned him “America’s Favorite DJ.”
