Meek Mill already has a vision for his upcoming film YN, and he’s looking to draw inspiration from one of the most celebrated crime movies of the 21st century.
The Philadelphia rapper took to X on Thursday (Aug. 27) to share his desire to bring someone connected to the production of the 2002 Brazilian film City of God on board for his upcoming project.
“I need the producer of city of god to shoot this movie called ‘YN’ I really do!” Meek wrote.
The post quickly caught the attention of Ovrkast., who shared Meek’s message and added, “There’s so much to dissect here.”
Meanwhile, other fans were excited about the possibility of a connection between YN and City of God. One X user described the idea as “amazing,” while noting that the challenge would be finding a way to capture the same intensity, violence, and chaos of the acclaimed film without simply copying its approach.
City of God, directed by Fernando Meirelles and co-directed by Kátia Lund, tells the story of young people growing up surrounded by violence and organized crime in Rio de Janeiro. Andrea Barata Ribeiro, Maurício Andrade Ramos, and Hank Levine were among the producers behind the acclaimed film.
The movie went on to become a major international critical success, earning four nominations at the 76th Academy Awards, including Best Director for Meirelles and Best Adapted Screenplay. More than 20 years after its debut, City of God continues to be celebrated, holding a 91 percent critics score on Rotten Tomatoes. The New York Times also ranked it No. 15 on its 2025 list of the 100 best films of the 21st century.
While Meek Mill has not shared many details about YN, his recent post was not the first time he has mentioned the project. The rapper brought up the film about a week earlier, suggesting he has already been working on ideas for how he wants the movie to take shape.
If YN eventually moves forward, it would not be Meek’s first appearance in the film world. He previously starred as Blax in the 2020 drama Charm City Kings, directed by Ángel Manuel Soto and produced in part by Will Smith.
At this point, Meek has not revealed whether anyone from the City of God production team has responded to his request.
