Jay-Z Says Beyoncé Deserves More Recognition for Her Production Skills

Beyoncé’s voice has dominated the spotlight for decades, but Jay-Z believes another side of her artistry deserves far more recognition. While talking about his wife’s work behind the scenes, he explained that her abilities as a producer are often overlooked because of her undeniable presence as a singer and performer.

Speaking with Extra at the New York premiere of his upcoming HBO series JAY-Z IN 8, Jay called Beyoncé a “phenomenal producer and writer” and praised her willingness to experiment in the studio. He highlighted how freely she explores melodies and different ideas without worrying about whether every attempt will ultimately make the finished song.

“She’s fearless,” Jay said. He acknowledged that he can sometimes become self-conscious during the creative process, whereas Beyoncé is more comfortable chasing an idea in the moment and deciding afterward whether it actually works.

Beyoncé’s production credits back up Jay’s praise. She has been involved in the creative process behind the boards since her Destiny’s Child days, earning producer and vocal producer credits on tracks such as “Bills, Bills, Bills.” By the group’s final album, Destiny Fulfilled, she had also earned an executive producer credit alongside her production and vocal production work.

That creative involvement carried over seamlessly into her solo career. Beyoncé earned producer, executive producer and vocal producer credits on her 2003 debut album, Dangerously in Love, including a production credit for “Crazy in Love.” She later took on executive producer, producer and vocal producer roles for B’Day, collaborating with producers such as Rich Harrison, Swizz Beatz, Rodney Jerkins and The Neptunes.

For Jay, that history helps illustrate why focusing solely on Beyoncé’s vocals overlooks a major part of the creative process behind her music. He praised her exceptional memory and explained that the constant experimentation he sees when they work together is one of the qualities that makes her an “amazing producer.”

His remarks come as both artists celebrate significant milestones in their respective catalogs. Beyoncé recently commemorated the 20th anniversary of B’Day, while Jay is marking 25 years of The Blueprint as JAY-Z IN 8 gears up for its Sept. 18 premiere on HBO.
