When J. Cole was promoting The Fall-Off, he made it sound like retirement was inevitable, suggesting that the album would be his final project and that fans might never see him again afterward.
However, it seems Cole may have reconsidered his plans. Following the success of his album and an even bigger tour, the rapper is admitting that he can no longer definitively say he is ready to walk away from music.
During a conversation with his mentor and music executive Mark Pitts and GQ writer Frazier Tharpe, Cole opened up about his thoughts on retirement. Although he isn’t currently committed to making another album, he recognizes that the desire to create music will eventually return.
“After this tour right here? Come on, man, this is crazy… When I was making that album, I was making it like, ‘Damn, this is going to be my last sh*t.’ Luckily, by the time I got to actually finishing the album, because of circumstances, I’m like, ‘Nah, I’ll never say I’m going to retire.’ I don’t know when the next thing is going to happen, but I’m definitely not going to say no,” Cole revealed.
This is undoubtedly welcome news for J. Cole fans, who no longer have to worry about the rapper walking away from music permanently. However, that doesn’t mean a new album is coming anytime soon, so fans will still need to be patient.
Either way, it’s reassuring to know that one of this generation’s most talented artists isn’t ready to call it quits just yet. Losing Cole so soon would be a major disappointment, especially when The Fall-Off shows that he still has plenty left to offer.
