George Lowe, widely recognized for voicing Space Ghost on Space Ghost Coast to Coast, passed away on Sunday at the age of 67.
His representative confirmed his passing to Deadline, though the cause of death remains unknown. His friend, “Marvelous Marvin” Boone, shared in a Facebook tribute that Lowe had been battling a “long illness.”
“I’m beyond devastated,” Boone wrote. “My Zobanian brother and best friend for over 40 years, George Lowe, has passed away after a long illness. A part of me had also died. He was a supremely talented Artist and Voice actor. A true warm-hearted Genius. Funniest man on Earth too. I’ve stolen jokes from him for decades. He stole some of mine. He was also the voice of Space Ghost and so much more. Pweeloto.”
Lowe’s breakthrough came in 1994 when he took on the role of Space Ghost in the animated talk show parody Space Ghost Coast to Coast, which aired until 1999. The series, a comedic twist on traditional talk shows, featured the classic Hanna-Barbera character interviewing live-action celebrity guests such as Busta Rhymes, Willie Nelson, and Raven-Symoné. It later returned as part of Cartoon Network’s Adult Swim block from 2001 to 2004.
In addition to Space Ghost Coast to Coast, Lowe reprised his role in the spinoff Cartoon Planet and appeared in shows like Aqua Teen Hunger Force, Robot Chicken, and The Brak Show. Most recently, he voiced Space Ghost in a February 2023 episode of Max’s Jellystone.
One of his most memorable moments came in 1996 when, as Space Ghost, he interviewed Talking Heads’ David Byrne for Space Ghost Coast to Coast, a standout episode from the series.
