Lizzo Gets Real About Depression Battle: ‘I Didn’t Want to Be Alive’

Lizzo recently got emotional about her mental health struggles at a Los Angeles concert.

While explaining the title of her upcoming album Love in Real Life, she revealed, “I named it that because about a year and a half ago, I was in such a dark, deep depression.”

Visibly moved, she continued, “I was so heartbroken by the world and so deeply hurt that I didn’t want to live anymore. I was so deeply afraid of people that I didn’t wanna be seen. And eventually, I got over that fear.”

Lizzo recently shared her mental health journey during a Los Angeles performance.

While explaining her upcoming album title Love in Real Life, she revealed, “About a year and a half ago, I was in such a dark, deep depression.”

Fighting back tears, she admitted, “I was so heartbroken by the world and so deeply hurt that I didn’t want to live anymore. I was so deeply afraid of people that I didn’t wanna be seen. And eventually, I got over that fear.”

She then described a concert where a stranger “miraculously” approached her saying, “Lizzo, I love you.”

“They reached out, and then I reached out,” she continued, “and we hugged, and it felt so damn good. And it then it was 10 people, and then it was 100 people, and then it was 1,000 people and then it was 10,000 people showering me with love and support and reaching out and allowing me to reach back out and embracing me. And it was fucking lifesaving.”

“And I was like, ‘damn, you can’t get this shit on the internet bro. This is the kind of love you can only get in real life,” she added.

Lizzo clarified she wasn’t seeking her fans’ “sympathy.”

“I share that story because I know somebody here tonight either is currently going through or has gone through depression or darkness or felt so betrayed by someone they trusted, or was lied [about] and hated for those lies,” she explained. “It’s a universal feeling and experience, and I know I sound like a broken record because I say it all the time—reach out!”

This was her first show since four former employees sued her in August 2023 for sexual harassment and bullying. After 2023’s Special Tour, three dancers claimed she sexually harassed them and created a hostile work environment.

Designer Asha Daniels later filed another lawsuit accusing Lizzo of bullying, harassment, and racial discrimination.

Lizzo denied the first lawsuit’s allegations as “false” and “sensationalized.” Her spokesperson called the second suit “a bogus, absurd publicity stunt.”

In December 2024, a judge dismissed Daniels’ case, while the dancers’ case is currently in appeals.

On Thursday, Lizzo released another track, “Still Bad,” shortly after dropping her album’s title song, “Love in Real Life.”

Earlier this year, the 36-year-old singer also shared her weight loss milestone online. “I haven’t seen this number since 2014! Let this be a reminder you can do anything you put your mind to. Time for new goals!” she posted at the time.
