In a chat with Shannon Sharpe on his Club Shay Shay podcast, Damon Wayans Sr. got real about dating the same woman as his nephew—and didn’t see any problem with it.
“Hold on, this can’t be true, that you dated the same woman as your nephew once?” Sharpe asked around the 2:30:00 mark of the interview, seen above. “Yeah, I was in love with her, that’s the thing,” Wayans admitted, which prompted Sharpe to cross his arms. “You ain’t never did the Jackson Five?” Wayans joked. “Hell no! I mean, for a family member, that’s off-limits, Damon,” Sharpe fired back.
“No, but it wasn’t like they were in love,” Wayans explained, while Sharpe showed his disapproval. “Do you know how small the pool is out here in Cali? The dating pool. This was probably 2001-2. … I got divorced, and I was by myself for two years. And then I saw her and I was just like, ‘Oh my God, I’m in love.’ And I found out my nephew had dated ’em. I’m like, you know, ‘What’s up with that?’ He goes, ‘That’s you.’ I was like, ‘Okay, pass the Courvoisier. Let’s go!’ And I went and I fell in love. And it was okay!”
When Sharpe asked if his family gave him grief about the relationship, Wayans confessed that family get-togethers were “awkward” for a while. “I don’t know about that one, Damon… I’d just have to let her go,” Sharpe added. “No you ain’t see her, you’d understand,” Wayans replied, mentioning she was also an amazing cook. “And then, the other things… While she cooked!”
Elsewhere in the lengthy interview, the 64-year-old comedian and actor discussed the artist formerly known as Kanye West’s recent behavior, comparing it to a “homeless person” talking to themselves. He also revealed he made “a lot of money” from his sitcom work, and claimed that the late Robin Williams stole jokes from other comedians.
