Travis Scott was completely surprised to discover that Adrien Brody produces beats.
The Utopia artist was chatting with Eric Skelton for the newest Complex cover story when he learned that Cameron Diaz considers herself a Travis Scott fan.
After expressing excitement about this news, Scott was asked if it was “surprising” to encounter other celebrities who appreciate his music. He specifically mentioned two-time Academy Award winner Adrien Brody, who recently took home the Best Actor trophy at the 97th Academy Awards.
“Did you see The Brutalist? That movie is hard as fuck. I hope he wins Best Actor. That’s my dog,” Scott said just a month before the Oscars ceremony.
“I bumped into him at a fashion show recently, and I’ve always been a fan of his work. He’s been in Wes Anderson films and stuff, and collaborated with many directors I respect,” the Houston rapper continued. “I sat next to him thinking, ‘Damn, I don’t even know if this guy knows who I am.’ And the first thing he says is, ‘Yo, bro, I fuck with your shit.’ And I’m like, ‘What the fuck?'”
“He makes beats too. He was like, ‘You know, I make beats and stuff,'” Scott remembered. “I’m like, ‘You gotta send me some beats!’ So we had a good chat. Man, that blew my mind. That’s wild. I experience stuff like that all the time.”
While we wait for a potential Scott and Brody collab, it’s worth noting the actor has been drumming in indie rock band Big Japan for years. Last December, he told the Los Angeles Times about how starring in the 1994 film Angels in the Outfield actually inspired him to start making beats.
“That movie, by the way, got me making beats because I hung out with some kids in The Bay in Oakland who were producing and rapping,” Brody explained around the 2:45-minute mark below. “And I grew up in New York, in kind of like the birth of hip-hop, but I didn’t know that I could actually go make tracks. And I started producing tracks with these guys and learned how to do it and went back to LA, and this was before the internet.”
After 30 years of producing, we need to hear what Brody’s been making all this time.
