The Weeknd’s Hurry Up Tomorrow flopped hard, while Final Destination Bloodlines has already crushed it at the box office.
Hurry Up Tomorrow debuted this weekend with a measly $3.3 million, landing in sixth place. Meanwhile, Final Destination Bloodlines easily scored the franchise’s biggest opening ever, pulling in a massive $51 million in its first week.
The previous high-water mark for the series was the fourth movie, The Final Destination, which dropped in 2009.
Hurry Up Tomorrow, on the other hand, couldn’t overcome its brutal reviews: It scored just 14% on Rotten Tomatoes and earned a dismal C- grade on CinemaScore.
When the film’s co-star Jenna Ortega appeared at CinemaCon in March, she admitted the film is “hard to describe” after its trailer premiered.
“I haven’t seen a movie quite like it. It’s very soulful,” she said. “It feels more like an experience, and when you go into it with that mentality, it makes sense.”
In the movie, the Weeknd (real name Abel Tesfaye) plays a fictionalized version of himself with Barry Keoghan as his manager Lee. Ortega plays Amina — a woman romantically linked with the Weeknd.
