Squid Game creator, Hwang Dong-hyuk, has suffered additional tooth loss while producing the hit series’ final season.
In a recent conversation with Entertainment Weekly, the writer-director disclosed he lost two more teeth during work on the show’s third season, pushing his total tooth loss to approximately ten.
“I thought it was going to be okay, but this time I had to pull out two more teeth as well,” Hwang explained. “I had to pull out about eight teeth in season 1, and now I have two teeth more out, and I haven’t put them back in yet. So I’m waiting for them.”
Hwang had previously mentioned losing eight or nine teeth from the stress of creating the first season. Despite global success and widespread praise, the demands of crafting another compelling installment have proved equally punishing.
“I do already have the universe and the space that I have envisioned come to life, so in a sense, season 2 and season 3 was easier compared to season 1,” Hwang noted. “But the problem is that for season 2 and season 3, we had to shoot and write in one go. It was as if we were making one season, and we tried as best as we could to bring in season 3 as fast as possible. So the total amount was much larger, and we had to shoot for around one year, so it was very physically demanding.”
Season 2 concluded with protagonist Gi-hun (Lee Jung-jae) attempting an unsuccessful uprising against the enigmatic Front Man (Lee Byung-hun), leading to the death of a dear friend, Jung-bae (Lee Seo-hwan). Now, the eagerly awaited third and final season guarantees even more sinister and perilous developments as the series approaches its violent finale.
