Shannon Sharpe Presses Jim Jones: “Were You Smoking When You Said You’re Better Than Nas?”

Shannon Sharpe didn’t hold back when he questioned Jim Jones about his bold claim of being a better rapper than Nas.

During an episode of the Nightcap podcast with co-host Chad “Ochocinco” Johnson, Sharpe asked Jones if he smokes—referring to weed—which the Dipset rapper confirmed.

Sharpe then hit him with, “Were you smoking when you said you were better than Nas?” around the 14:55 mark, dead serious. But instead of backing down, Jones stood firm, doubling down on his stance that he’s actually nicer than Nasty Nas.

“Let’s get this right—I’m way more influential than Nas,” Jim Jones said without hesitation.

He went on, “Nas was nice when I was in high school. Nas was dope. We appreciate him. He had a little bit of a run. But Nas always came up second to [Jay-Z], DMX, and all these other people. He never had that type of influence on us, except for his first album.”

“I used to want to dress like Nas,” Jones added. “He had one of the illest albums of all time. … I’m a real fan of Nas. But he kind of lost me after the movie Belly and shit like that.”

Jones also brought up Dipset’s brief beef with Nas in the early 2000s, saying, “We the ones that went wild on them boys,” referencing their 2003 track “I Really Mean It.”

Despite Shannon Sharpe pushing back and praising Nas’ lyrical skill as beyond comparison, Jones refused to back down. “Let Nas stick up for himself and meet me in the booth or something if he wants to do something historical,” he challenged. “I would run circles around Nas rapping right now, bro.”

Trying to smooth things over, Jones told Sharpe, “I’m not mad. It’s about the sportsmanship of the game. I’m a very aggressive person. I seem to get misconstrued when I’m talking my shit. I’m just talking my shit, you heard?”

But the mood shifted again when Jones threw out a jab, implying Sharpe and Ochocinco only brought him on Nightcap to boost their numbers. That didn’t sit well with Sharpe, who quickly fired back: “This the biggest podcast you’ve ever been on.”

Shannon Sharpe called out Jim Jones after the rapper hyped himself up during a recent appearance on Fat Joe and Jadakiss’ podcast. “They forget, I got a hell of a catalog. Gold records, platinum records… Check my track record. Then check everybody else’s track record,” Jones said confidently.

He even doubled down with, “If you want to go to the Billboard entries, pull up Nas’ Billboard entries and pull up my Billboard entries.”

But when it comes to actual numbers, the stats tell a different story. As a solo artist, Jones has had just two songs crack the Billboard Hot 100, with only one hitting the Top 10. Nas, on the other hand, boasts 27 entries on the Hot 100, including two Top 10s. On the album side, Jones has three Billboard 200 entries, while Nas has 27 — 16 of which made the Top 10, and six that hit No. 1.

Jones admitted to overshooting during his chat with Sharpe and Ocho. “I know I made a little boo boo when we talk about the sales… I don’t feel like getting into that rhetoric,” he said.

Still, Jimmy wasn’t ready to back all the way down. He took to Instagram on Monday with a new challenge — this time aimed directly at Sharpe: meet him in the gym.

Sharpe hasn’t appeared to respond.
