Malcolm-Jamal Warner’s mother breaks her silence following his passing.

Malcolm-Jamal Warner’s mother, Pamela, has shared a heartfelt statement following his passing.

Posting on the newly created Instagram page @mjwlivingleacy on Aug. 6, Pamela poured out her emotions in a touching tribute to her son.

“Needless to say our hearts are heavy with the loss of Malcolm,” she wrote. “He was a kind, loving man with a huge heart for humanity. He wanted everyone to recognize their inner strength and believe they could succeed, accomplish, and transform. This was his latest mission and work—transformation—so that you could be fully present in your life.”

“Malcolm was an exceptional husband, father, and son — a man who loved life, his wife, and his daughter deeply,” Pamela wrote. “He wasn’t just my son; he was my teacher, coach, confidant, business partner, and best friend. His father was immensely proud of him and loved him fiercely and unconditionally.”

She went on to share how connected he was to his artistic side. “Although he started his musical journey later, at 26, he mastered the bass and went on to form his own band, Miles Long,” she said. “A poet as well as a musician, he released four albums, earning two Grammy nominations and winning one Grammy Award. At just eight years old, after his final stage performance, he declared that being on stage was what he wanted to do for the rest of his life. It became a self-fulfilling prophecy.”

Pamela reflected on the symbolism of his passing, writing, “Malcolm was birthed through water, and he transitioned through water. He left this world the same way he entered it. This was his time. His mission here had been fulfilled.”

The Instagram account she created to honor him will continue to celebrate his life and work. “In the weeks and months ahead, we’ll be sharing updates on the work being done in his memory. Thank you for being here and staying connected,” she added.

Warner passed away on July 20 at the age of 54 after an accidental drowning in Costa Rica. According to the Judicial Investigation Agency, he had been body surfing during a family trip. “Mr. Warner was playing with his daughter at the seashore at one point. He then left her out of the water, and he and a friend entered the sea,” their statement read.

“It was at that moment that they were swept away by the current. The friend was able to get out, but Mr. Warner could not. Several people on the beach pulled him from the water, and Red Cross officials tried to save him, but he was pronounced dead at the scene.”
