Bow Wow Says the Shortage of “Timeless Music” Comes Down to a Lack of Substance

Bow Wow isn’t impressed with the current direction of music and says artists need to bring more “substance” to the table.

The rapper, who is set to headline the upcoming Boys for Life Tour, stopped by the Friday (January 30) episode of Sway’s Universe, where he shared his blunt take on today’s music scene.

At around the 26-minute mark of the interview, the So So Def artist — whose most recent solo album was 2009’s New Jack City II — said he feels that no one is making truly “timeless” music anymore.

“Ain’t nobody making music that makes the ladies cry or really feel something when they play it,” Bow said, adding that a lot of what’s coming out right now feels very moment-based.

“Even the biggest records, it’s big… but let’s see where it’s at when you reach the finish line,” he continued.

While acknowledging that music will always “change,” Bow Wow encouraged artists to focus on creating songs that will actually stand the test of time. “We’re missing substance,” he said. “That’s why it feels good when certain rappers drop. It’s almost like therapy, or like you’ve just been healed from something.”

He went on to explain that music is about self-expression, noting that even party records can become timeless if done right. “Even if it’s a party record, there are party records that last forever — it’s how you write them,” he said. “It’s how you place them. Anybody can go to the club, buy a bottle, and shake some ass. But can you talk about that in a different way, in an artistic way, while still getting the point across? That’s where people struggle.”

Bow Wow, who is gearing up to release his seventh studio album, says he plans to inject more originality into the music with his upcoming single, “Father’s Day,” especially since he’s now a father of two following his last LP.
