Jeannie Mai has opened up about how she views divorce, comparing it to death, two years after her split from Jeezy.
The former couple, who share a four-year-old daughter named Monaco, went through a highly public custody dispute after the rapper filed for divorce in 2023, just a year into their marriage.
While appearing on the Thursday (January 29) episode of the Question Everything podcast, Mai spoke candidly about how deeply painful the divorce was for her. The TV personality was previously married to television host Freddy Harteis from 2007 to 2018.
At around the 28-minute mark of the episode, Mai said she felt relieved knowing Monaco wouldn’t remember the “turmoil” between her parents during the breakup. “That’s not something I want her to ever have to think about. My job is to define peace for her. So, she’s going to get that,” Mai shared.
The former The Real co-host went on to describe divorce as a form of “wreckage” that impacts entire families, adding that it’s even more difficult when children are involved. “Divorce, it’s experiencing death alive,” she said.
“There’s no way to fully grasp that feeling of sharing space with someone and then suddenly having it close in on you, to the point where you start questioning your own thoughts,” Mai added. “One day you had a plan, you had certain thoughts, and then all of a sudden it turns into something completely different.”
During her divorce from Jeezy, Mai accused the rapper of domestic abuse and of putting their daughter at risk by not properly securing firearms in his home. The Trap or Die artist denied both claims, and after a heated legal process, he and Mai were eventually able to reach a resolution.
In a vlog shared last December, Mai described divorce as “earth-shattering” and “a wake-up call.” “It’s because the life you imagined disappears, and the future you actually need starts calling out to you,” she said.
