Big Mama has officially arrived, but many Latto fans were left confused after the rapper previously suggested she might retire following the album’s release, especially as she adjusts to life as a new mother with 21 Savage.
During a recent conversation with Nadeska Alexis for Apple Music, Latto opened up about the project, motherhood, and the comments that sparked speculation about her future in music.
Alexis admitted she never believed the retirement announcement, pointing to Latto’s drive and ambition. The rapper laughed and responded, “That’s fine,” before explaining that her mindset has shifted since making those comments several weeks ago.
“Remember when we was talking about postpartum depression, the good days and bad days?” Latto said. “That was definitely not one of the good days. Especially experiencing postpartum for the first time. You don’t know what to expect. I kind of underestimated it.”
She went on to explain that she was feeling overwhelmed while balancing multiple major life changes at once.
“Yeah, that was just one of those days where I was at home and overwhelmed with the album. I was overwhelmed. I’m experiencing motherhood for the first time. I’m dropping my album. My last album, at that, that I owed the label. So it’s just, like… I was going through it that day.”
Latto made it clear that she’s feeling differently now, though she acknowledged that her emotions can fluctuate from day to day.
“Today’s a good day. I wouldn’t say I’m retiring today… Talk to me next week again, I might say, ‘Nah, that s**t was for real.’ So, I don’t know. I’m going through it.”
The Atlanta rapper also reflected on being more open about her struggles rather than trying to appear perfect.
“Listen, I crashed. It is what it is. I’m not trying to be perfect anymore. I’m not trying to uphold this… I crashed. It is what it is. I’ma try not to take it to Twitter next time,” she added with a laugh.
For now, it appears Latto’s retirement plans are far from set in stone, with the rapper focusing on navigating motherhood, her career, and the success of Big Mama one day at a time.
Interestingly, Latto’s comments may also shed some light on the timeline surrounding her pregnancy and the birth of her child. Her retirement announcement was posted on May 8, and based on her recent remarks about experiencing postpartum depression, it appears she may have already welcomed her baby by that point. However, the public reveal of the child’s arrival didn’t come until nearly two weeks later.
Meanwhile, Big Mama continues to spark conversation online for more than just its music. The album has fueled speculation about renewed tension between Latto and Cardi B, with some listeners interpreting certain lyrics as direct shots at the Bronx rapper.
Fans have especially focused on bars that seem to reference Cardi’s leaked rant about Latto and the public apology that followed. Some have even viewed the lyrics as Latto challenging Cardi to respond on wax, adding another layer of intrigue to the ongoing discussion surrounding the album.
