Jay-Z appeared to throw shots at Tory Lanez during his headline performance at the Roots Picnic, years after the Canadian rapper accused Roc Nation of working against him.
While Tory Lanez is currently serving a prison sentence for shooting Megan Thee Stallion, Jay-Z used part of a freestyle alongside The Roots on Saturday, May 30, to take aim at several figures, including Drake, Nicki Minaj, Dame Dash, and Tory.
A clip shared by Complex Music on X highlighted bars many listeners believe were directed at Lanez. “The Roc’s not crumbling, the leprechauns have magically run out of pranks / Your son on the federal jail-line mumbling something about having, too much in his drink / You know how dumb that is?” Jay-Z rapped.
The lyrics appeared to reference both Lanez’s height and the criticism aimed at Roc Nation by his father, Sonstar Peterson. Following Tory’s conviction, Sonstar repeatedly accused Roc Nation and its affiliates of influencing the legal proceedings against his son. Tory also echoed similar claims over the years.
Many fans interpreted Jay-Z’s lyrics as a nod to a recorded phone conversation involving Tory Lanez and Kelsey Harris, during which Lanez apologized and suggested he had consumed too much alcohol. However, it is important to note that he did not explicitly admit to shooting Megan Thee Stallion during that call.
It remains to be seen whether Tory Lanez or anyone from his camp will respond to Jay-Z’s comments, whether through legal channels, social media, or statements made from prison. For years, some supporters have pushed theories alleging that Jay-Z played a role in influencing the Tory Lanez case, and these latest lyrics are likely to reignite those conversations online.
Jay-Z didn’t stop with Tory, either. During the freestyle, he also appeared to take aim at Kanye West, Oschino, Jaguar Wright, Tony Buzbee, and several other figures. The performance quickly sparked mixed reactions, with many fans praising the sharp lyricism while others mocked or criticized the bars. Given Jay-Z’s polarizing presence in online hip-hop debates, the divided response was hardly unexpected, especially with so many notable names being mentioned.
Meanwhile, speculation surrounding new music from Hov continues to circulate, although no concrete details have emerged. For now, fans seem more focused on revisiting and enjoying the full Roots Picnic set, with the headline-making freestyle serving as just one part of the performance.
