Chris Brown is enjoying his time on the “R&B” tour with Usher, but the money earned from his performances could potentially go toward resolving a major legal dispute. The issue involves his former housekeeper Maria Avila, who was awarded a $13 million judgment after she was attacked by one of his dogs in 2020.
Avila previously sought to collect Brown’s tour earnings and royalties to help cover the judgment. However, Brown has filed a notice of intent to challenge the ruling and request a new trial.
According to TMZ, Brown and his legal team have now taken further action by opposing Avila’s request to have all of his current and future income directed toward the judgment until it is fully paid. Court documents state that after the jury ruled in Avila’s favor, she claimed Brown had made no effort to satisfy the award, prompting her attempt to pursue his earnings.
With several “R&B” tour dates alongside Usher scheduled through December, Brown is expected to continue earning significant income from the shows.
In his latest filing, Brown argued that Avila’s request is overly broad and claimed the $13 million award exceeds what the law considers appropriate damages. The singer has previously denied wrongdoing, alleging that Avila provoked the dog before the attack.
Elsewhere in the case, Chris Brown’s legal team argued that additional issues justify granting a new trial. They pointed to what they described as a lack of sufficient findings supporting the verdict, alleged jury misconduct, and procedural irregularities that they claim affected Brown’s right to a fair trial. A hearing is scheduled for September 22, after which the court will determine whether Avila’s case will move forward further.
Meanwhile, Brown is also dealing with another legal matter. The singer recently pleaded guilty to one count of affray related to a London nightclub incident, with sentencing scheduled for October. Affray carries a maximum possible sentence of three years in prison.
However, the case may not result in a major punishment. Similar to the housekeeper’s lawsuit, ongoing developments continue to influence how Brown’s legal battles could ultimately unfold.
