Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez has shared that she has started the process of freezing her eggs, while using the moment to encourage more honest discussions around women’s reproductive health.
The New York congresswoman revealed the news through a series of Instagram Stories, explaining that she usually keeps her personal matters private but decided to share her experience because it could provide support and information for other women considering similar choices.
“Don’t be weird about this,” she told her followers. “Even though all of you will be.”
Ocasio-Cortez said egg freezing had been something she had been considering for quite some time and chose to speak openly about it after recognizing that many women lack access to enough information about fertility and reproductive options.
“I’ve been considering this for a while,” she said, explaining that she wanted to share what she had learned because the process can often feel overwhelming and unfamiliar.
The 36-year-old Democrat also gave followers a glimpse into the treatment process, showing the medications she was using and recording herself giving one of the required hormone injections, with her French bulldog, Deco, by her side.
After completing the injection, she smiled and reassured viewers, saying, “It wasn’t so bad.”
Ocasio-Cortez said she hopes opening up about her experience will help make the process of fertility preservation feel less intimidating while encouraging more people to have conversations about it.
Although her focus was mainly on educating others, she also noted that the ongoing political debate over reproductive rights played a role in her choice to share her story.
A vocal supporter of abortion access and reproductive freedom, Ocasio-Cortez has frequently spoken out against restrictions introduced after the Supreme Court overturned Roe v. Wade in 2022. She has continued calling for stronger support for reproductive rights, emphasizing that women should have more control over decisions involving their own health care.
