Boosie Badazz is no longer willing to wait for streaming platforms to give him what he believes is a fair payout.
The Baton Rouge rap veteran recently criticized Tubi after claiming the platform paid him only $120,000 for what he says were nearly 26 million streams of his film My Struggle. He shared his frustrations during an appearance on On The Spot.
“We did almost 26 million streams of one film. Really? And got $120,000,” Boosie said during the interview (around the hour and four-minute mark). “So I checked them out. You mean to tell me if I try this myself, I make triple of what I make? We have been fooled.”
Boosie compared the current state of the film industry to what happened in music, arguing that major streaming platforms have changed the business in a similar way record companies transformed the rap industry.
“What Netflix and Tubi and all these people done did is they done did what they did to the rap game,” he said. “Now they done did it to the movie game too.”
His answer is the upcoming Boosie Network, a subscription-based platform set to launch on Aug. 22, featuring original content while encouraging independent filmmakers to release their projects through his service.
“I’m fitting to make my own Netflix,” Boosie said. “I’ll pay you more than Netflix.”
The platform’s first major release will be Legendary, a documentary featuring rare footage of Nipsey Hussle, which will debut exclusively on the service when it launches. Boosie also plans to drop eight or nine previously unreleased films on the same day.
“I got merch. I got music. I got fishing videos. I got eight, nine movies I’m dropping on August 22nd that you never seen before,” he said.
Boosie also shared his proposed payment structure for independent creators, saying he would pay collaborators $1 for every sale of $6.99 titles while keeping $5 from each purchase.
“If they buy mine a million times, I’m gonna give you a million-dollar check. And I make five,” he explained.
“Nobody’s doing what I’m going to do,” he concluded. “I bet on myself.”
In other recent Boosie news, the rapper apologized to ASAP Rocky after previously believing a viral image showing Rocky wearing a thong during a performance was real.
