Behind the rollout for Pink Friday 2 was a much larger financial dispute than fans likely realized. Newly filed evidence in an ongoing lawsuit reveals that Nicki Minaj’s team felt Republic Records’ $250,000 budget for a week-long promotional campaign in New York was far too low to cover the actual expenses of the rollout.
According to TMZ, a Nov. 29, 2023 email from someone on Minaj’s team described the allowance as “extremely low” and estimated that the week-long campaign would require at least twice that amount. The message reportedly pointed out that hotel and transportation expenses alone could eat up the entire budget.
The internal budget breakdown included $18,000 for six days of photography and videography, as well as $4,200 for tailoring over the same period. Travel costs also raised concerns. One email asked whether Minaj’s son would be accompanying her and noted that her standard flight rider already cost more than $2,000 per leg, making a $10,000 travel budget difficult to manage.
The emails have since become evidence in a lawsuit filed by 24/7 Productions, the live events company that worked on Minaj’s 2023 Jingle Ball performances and the New York promotional campaign for Pink Friday 2.
24/7 Productions filed a lawsuit against Minaj and Pink Friday Productions in March, alleging that it fronted more than $275,000 in expenses related to the work and was never reimbursed. The company claims Minaj’s team approved the budgets in advance and that it was responsible for production and logistics surrounding the appearances. The case is still active in New York Supreme Court.
Minaj has disputed personal liability in the matter. In July, she asked the court to remove her individually from the lawsuit, arguing that the agreement in question was between 24/7 Productions and Pink Friday Productions LLC. According to Minaj, any alleged outstanding debt should be attributed to the company rather than her personally.
The newly surfaced emails do not determine who is ultimately responsible for the disputed amount, but they provide a rare glimpse into the financial expectations surrounding a major album rollout. Pink Friday 2 debuted at No. 1 on the Billboard 200 in December 2023, while its accompanying tour went on to become the highest-grossing tour by a woman in Rap at the time.
