Jay-Z has spent much of this year looking back on his career. One of the biggest platforms for that reflection has been his JAŸ-Z In 8 docuseries with Rick Rubin on HBO, where the two revisit some of his most significant songs, eras, and deeper cuts. According to Complex, episode six includes an unexpected moment of praise for Kanye West, making the moment bittersweet for fans of both artists considering how strained their relationship has become.
While a Jay-Z and Ye reconciliation may seem unlikely, comments like these suggest there is still some mutual affection between the two.
The moment came while Rubin was asking Jay about the 2021 collaboration “Jail,” which appeared on Ye’s Donda. Rubin suggested that the Chicago rapper’s extremist views and controversial bigotry had left him isolated, almost as though he were in prison. “In some ways, he was removed from the community,” he argued. “It was not by choice, because he was being himself.”
Hov described Ye as “one of the most brilliant creatives we’re ever going to see.” He continued, “No matter what, he’s always… had this space for me and this reverence as his big brother. Obviously he does his things… But I know he hasn’t lost that feeling.”
The Roc Nation mogul also reportedly broke down his “Jail” verse line by line, including “Told him, ‘Stop all of that red cap, we going home.’” The lyric’s reference to Ye’s support for Donald Trump has taken on additional irony over the years, while the song itself may ultimately be the final collaboration between the two artists.
At press time, JAŸ-Z In 8 has released only the first four of its eight episodes on HBO Max. Once the sixth episode arrives, fans will be able to hear the conversation and Jay’s comments in their full context.
Jay-Z dissed Kanye West during his Roots Picnic freestyle, suggesting just how strained their relationship is at the moment. Hov appeared to take aim at Ye over his comments about his children with Beyoncé.
Months later, however, Ye appeared to show support for Jay-Z ahead of his Yankee Stadium shows. Still, it’s possible the gesture was more connected to the shows’ art direction by Gabriel Moses than anything involving the Roc Nation MC.
Whatever their relationship looks like today after years of tension, Jay-Z and Ye have built too much history together to simply erase it. Many fans believe the two brought out the best in each other creatively, which is why hopes of reconciliation continue to fuel speculation about another collaboration.
