Coco Jones maintained her composure during a New York City photoshoot after a passerby attempted to provoke her with racist remarks.
In a vlog shared on Tuesday (Oct 21.), the Grammy-winning singer looked back on her experience at New York Fashion Week. One scene showed her posing for photos outside a city bus when she heard a woman shout “Ew!” Instead of reacting negatively, Jones thanked the heckler and continued with her photoshoot.
“You look so freaking Black! Blackie!” the stranger yelled, but Jones chose to ignore the offensive remarks and carry on.
After taking two more photos, Jones walks away as the woman shouts another remark that cannot be heard clearly. Rather than firing back with an insult, the singer blows the stranger a kiss and continues on her way.
The entertainer, who is set to lead a Bel-Air spinoff and reprise her role as Hilary Banks, has previously opened up about her experiences with colorism and the challenges she faced as a child star. In the early 2010s, the 28-year-old was dropped by Disney’s Hollywood Records after releasing one EP and appearing in network shows and films such as Good Luck, Charlie and Let It Shine.
“I definitely used to have my issues with colorism and it wasn’t something that I kind of chose it was kind of what was taught to me, like, ‘Okay, I guess these type of girls are better. They get more jobs,'” Jones said during a 2025 appearance on Sway In the Morning.
She continued, “I’m just not going to let the world make me feel like I’m a lesser version of a quality girl, of beauty, of all of these things.”
