Adam Driver has confirmed that he won’t be returning as Adam Sackler, one of the original characters, in HBO’s upcoming Girls reboot.
When asked whether he would reprise the role, Driver gave a brief response during an interview with CinemaBlend while promoting his new film Paper Tiger, saying, “No, but I wish them the best of luck.”
HBO announced the five-episode limited revival in October, with filming expected to begin in 2027, a decade after the show’s Season 6 finale. Lena Dunham, Allison Williams, Jemima Kirke, Zosia Mamet and Andrew Rannells are all set to return.
Dunham will serve as an executive producer alongside Judd Apatow, Ilene S. Landress and Michael P. Cohen, while her four co-stars will take on co-executive producer roles. However, Driver and co-showrunner and executive producer Jenni Konner were not mentioned in the press release.
Driver portrayed Adam Sackler, a part-time carpenter and actor who served as Hannah’s on-and-off love interest throughout all six seasons, which aired from 2012 to 2017. The role became his breakthrough performance and earned him three Emmy nominations.
Driver’s response comes months after Dunham’s memoir Famesick was released in April. In the book, she alleges that Driver was “verbally aggressive, condescending and physically imposing” and once threw a chair against the wall beside her after she stumbled over her lines.
Dunham had previously reflected on the experience in an interview with The Guardian, SAYING,
“At the time, I didn’t have the skill to … it never entered my mind to say, ‘I am your boss, you can’t speak to me this way.'” She added that “at that point in my 20s, I still thought that’s what great male geniuses do: eviscerate you.”
Driver was questioned about the memoir at Cannes in May while promoting Paper Tiger. He responded with “no comment on any of that,” adding that he was “saving it all for my book.”
Production on the Girls revival is scheduled to begin in 2027. Paper Tiger, which also stars Scarlett Johansson and Miles Teller, is set to hit theaters Nov. 13.
