Ciara got emotional reflecting on someone she never got to meet—her husband Russell Wilson’s late father, Harrison Wilson III, who passed away in 2010.
While appearing on the Mythical Kitchen webseries for her “last meal” ahead of her eighth album CiCi, the R&B star was asked around the 35-minute mark which person, dead or alive, she’d want to share that meal with. The question caught her off guard and brought her to tears.
Ciara chose Russell’s father, a respected lawyer, who passed away six years before she and Wilson tied the knot.
“I was not planning to cry,” she said to host Josh Scherer. “I’m so sorry. No, it’s okay. You left me tissue.”
Explaining her emotional choice, Ciara shared, “I just wanna know the man behind that man,” referring to her husband, Russell Wilson.
She apologized again through tears and lightened the moment with a laugh, joking that she needed a cookie to bring her “smiles.”
Though she never had the chance to meet her father-in-law, Ciara said she saw Russell’s natural fatherly instincts early on in their relationship. The couple now have three children together, and Ciara is also mom to her eldest, Future Zahir Wilburn, from her previous relationship with rapper Future.
During an appearance on The Kelly Clarkson Show last October, Ciara recalled one moment that stuck with her: “We were all in the house together. My dad was in the living room, Future was crawling on the floor, and there was a silver chair in the kitchen, and it was about to fall.”
“[Wilson] legit slid across that kitchen, so smooth, and caught that chair, and I was like, ‘Oh, okay,’” Ciara said with a smile. “I mean, it was pretty sexy, but it was pretty cute.”
