Argentine soccer legend Lionel Messi and his wife Antonela Roccuzzo stole the show when they popped up on Coldplay’s kiss cam during the band’s Miami concert.
Messi, 38, and Roccuzzo, 37, were spotted at Hard Rock Stadium on Sunday, July 27, enjoying the show from a VIP suite. It didn’t take long for the kiss cam to find the Inter Miami star and his wife of eight years. Messi smiled and waved as the camera zoomed in, with Antonela standing right by his side.
The stadium instantly erupted into “Messi! Messi!” chants, prompting Coldplay frontman Chris Martin to call him “the number one sportsperson of all time.”
“Thanks for coming today to see our band play,” Martin added, drawing even louder cheers from the crowd.
Roccuzzo took to Instagram to share a sweet photo of herself and Messi at the Coldplay concert.
“At least someone went with their own wife. Good,” read one popular comment on her post, racking up nearly 56,000 likes.
A Lionel Messi fan account chimed in with, “Some couples doesn’t have to hide their love,” while another commenter added, “He’s with his wife, he’s safe.”
The remarks were clear nods to the recent Coldplay kiss cam controversy, dubbed “ColdplayGate.” The Messi-Roccuzzo moment was a stark contrast to the awkward viral incident in Boston on July 16, when Astronomer CEO Andy Byron and Astronomer HR executive Kristin Cabot were caught on the kiss cam, sparking memes and eventually leading to Byron’s resignation.
Coldplay’s Miami show was the final U.S. stop on their tour. The band will head back to their home country of England in August before officially closing out the Music of the Spheres tour on September 8.
