Beyoncé’s father and former manager, Mathew Knowles, shared stories about touring with UGK, revealing that he used to travel with a gun and marijuana while managing one of his artists on the road.
Speaking during an interview on The Morning Hustle, Knowles looked back on his early days in artist management and his experience working with Lil O.
“My first artist was Lil O, it wasn’t Destiny’s Child,” he said (around the 15-minute mark). “Our first tour was with UGK — Pimp C and Bun B. I was in the club with these guys every night.”
“I had a briefcase, and it had a gun in it,” he continued. “It had a bag of weed in it. There was a bottle of Crown Royal. My thing was to collect the money and make sure that everybody was safe.”
In other Mathew Knowles news, he recently opened up about how money isn’t really a topic of conversation for Beyoncé, even amid reports that she’s now a billionaire. Speaking with Page Six, he said she “isn’t motivated by money.”
“I’ve never heard Beyoncé ever talk about money… It’s always been, ‘How can I make my fans happy? How can I be the best at what I’m doing?’” he said. “Her money came with the success, but that has never been a goal of hers. And I love that about her.”
Knowles added that while he congratulated her after she landed on Forbes’ famous rich list, he made it clear, “That’s just not Beyoncé. That’s not who she is.”
“She’s motivated by being the very best,” he continued. “She’s motivated by making her fans happy and…. giving back to the community as well.”
