Recently, Ray J’s mother, Sonja Norwood, hopped on social media to shut down the chatter surrounding his health.
Ray J’s condition has been making headlines over the past few weeks. Back in January, he was hospitalized with pneumonia. After returning home, he shocked fans with a heartbreaking update, revealing that doctors told him he may only have months to live due to serious heart issues.
Naturally, that sparked concern and skepticism among supporters. Now, Sonja Norwood is setting the record straight. In a video shared by The Shade Room, she revealed that Ray J is battling a heart condition known as cardiomyopathy — and it’s far from minor.
“It was so scary and serious that every other word that was explained to us was ‘this is life-threatening,'” she said. “They put him on five medications at that hospital, along with an IV to try and increase the flow of blood to his heart.”
“Seven days we were there,” Norwood added. “Seven days [we watched] him go through much pain, a lot of needles, a lot of testing to determine how serious this was.”
Sonja Norwood’s statement arrived just weeks after a viral clip showed Ray J performing in Louisiana with what appeared to be blood streaming from his eyes. The shocking footage immediately had fans worried, with many questioning whether he should even be on stage in that condition.
As the clip spread across social media, speculation started building that the whole thing was staged. Ray J seemed to push back on those claims in a Facebook post.
“I want to thank everybody out here for showing us love,” he said. “I’m on my way to Atlanta, and then I’m on my way to L.A. But I just want to thank everybody out here.”
“Forget what they’re talking about. Forget what you’re hearing. Thank you for your prayers,” he continued. “Thank you for your love. And again, all we can do is get better. Salute, I love you.”
