Gordo contributed to Drake’s MAID OF HONOUR and HABIBTI projects, which arrived as surprise releases alongside ICEMAN.
Drake stirred up major conversation by unexpectedly dropping three albums at once, whether due to ongoing speculation surrounding his label situation or simply because of how different each project sounded. One of the most noticeable names attached to MAID OF HONOUR is Gordo, who recently opened up to Rolling Stone about the rollout and admitted he didn’t even know three albums were coming.
“I knew it was going to be two albums,” he explained during a phone call with the publication. “I didn’t know it was going to be three.”
His comments suggest Drake kept even some of his closest collaborators largely unaware of the full plan, only revealing information on a need-to-know basis. The producer formerly known as Carnage said he listened to all three albums once they officially dropped, and while he may have expected part of the rollout, the final reveal still caught him by surprise.
Gordo’s latest comments offer a deeper look into Drake’s unexpected triple-album strategy, making it seem like the experience was just as exciting and shocking for those in his circle as it was for fans.
Gordo earned several credits across Drake’s MAID OF HONOUR album, including “Hoe Phase,” “Road Trips,” “Outside Tweaking” featuring Stunna Sandy, “Amazing Shape” with Popcaan, “BBW,” “True Bestie” featuring Iconic Savvy, “New Bestie,” “Stuck,” and “Goose And The Juice.” He also contributed to “WNBA” from HABIBTI.
During his conversation with Rolling Stone, the producer discussed Drake’s experimentation with more club-inspired sounds on MAID OF HONOUR, explaining that the process involved more than a year of consistently sending beats back and forth. Gordo also praised the Toronto rapper for reworking and tweaking the production he received, saying the finished songs often sounded completely different from the original concepts.
The producer also admitted he was excited by some of the unexpected guest appearances across the albums, including Sexyy Red’s feature on “Cheetah Print.”
Now, Gordo plans to shift his focus back to his own solo material following his latest album DIAMANTE, but he made it clear he’s thankful for the opportunity to work so closely with Drake.
“It’s been more than positive, right? So that’s a win right there,” he told Rolling Stone. “That’s literally a win. I’m so, so proud of him. He worked so hard and I’m happy that I’m just a very, very small piece into his legacy.”
