DDG rarely speaks using what he claims is his “real” voice, but the rapper and streamer recently gave Cam Newton a chance to hear it during an appearance on the Funky Friday podcast.
Around the 6:35 mark of their conversation, the two began discussing DDG’s so-called “real” voice—a noticeably deeper tone that many viewers have assumed is a joke or an attempt to get attention. However, DDG insisted that the voice is completely genuine.
“This is my real voice,” DDG explained. “I just don’t use it. But I will if people ask about it.”
DDG went on to explain that he felt comfortable enough around Cam Newton to speak in what he considers his natural voice. Throughout the conversation, his tone repeatedly shifted between his usual speaking voice and the deeper one, seemingly reinforcing his claim that he wasn’t putting on an act.
When Newton asked when he typically uses that voice, DDG revealed that it mostly comes out in private settings.
“When I’m at home with my mom, family, camera off, stuff like that,” he said.
He also explained that he prefers audiences to focus on his work rather than his voice.
“I want people to think about my music and content ideas,” DDG said. “I never had aspirations of being a voice actor.”
The topic first gained widespread attention in 2024 when DDG unexpectedly used his deeper voice during a conversation with Sexyy Red. Her reaction was immediate, as she appeared stunned before bursting into laughter.
“That’s why I don’t do it, bro,” DDG replied. “That’s why I don’t do that shit.”
DDG previously addressed his feelings about the voice in 2022, admitting that insecurity played a major role in why he rarely uses it publicly.
“I just get real insecure. I don’t like to really expose myself like that. I like to stay low-key and just be who I am,” he said. “So I’ve been trying to talk regular. I feel like when I talk regular, it’s like I’m more relatable to y’all.”
He added that using his everyday speaking voice has helped him build his brand as both a musician and content creator.
“It’s just easier for me to grow as a musical artist, creator, and shit,” DDG explained. “I just feel like if I use my deep voice, a lot of y’all wouldn’t take me seriously, and it’d be funny. I see a lot of people laughing about it, and that’s why I don’t really use it like that. A lot of people treat it like it’s a joke, but it’s really just me opening up.”
