Jennifer Lopez Says Breakups Should Be Celebrated, Not Cried Over

Jennifer Lopez has a different take on heartbreak, suggesting that breakups should be treated as something to celebrate rather than grieve.

While appearing on Subway Takes, the Office Romance star shared her belief that ending a relationship isn’t a setback, but a reset. “Breakups are not a failure,” Lopez said. “I honestly feel like it’s a launch pad into your next best self.”

She even joked that people should fully embrace the moment instead of mourning it. “We should have a party when we break up… People should say, ‘You broke up? Congratulations,’” she added.

The comments came less than two years after Jennifer Lopez’s divorce from Ben Affleck, whose rekindled romance with the superstar once captivated Hollywood before ending in 2024. Rather than viewing heartbreak as something to simply recover from, Lopez said choosing to walk away often signals personal growth.

“You made a decision,” she said. “It was probably the best thing for everybody.”

Lopez went further, suggesting that those who end relationships aren’t necessarily the ones winning in the situation. “If you go around your life and you’re breaking hearts … you’re the loser,” she said, adding that some of life’s biggest lessons tend to come after things fall apart.

“The biggest growth spurts I’ve had emotionally, mentally, psychologically have always come from a heartbreak,” Lopez explained, noting that such experiences often push people to reflect deeply and evolve.

Lopez is currently in promotional mode for Netflix’s Office Romance, her new romantic comedy alongside Ted Lasso star Brett Goldstein. The project has sparked online speculation about their on-screen chemistry, though Lopez has made it clear she is focused on herself.

Earlier this year, she described Goldstein as “kind,” “gentle,” and “very smart,” adding that their “great chemistry” only grew stronger during filming.

Goldstein has also spoken highly of Lopez, saying he and co-writer Joe Kelly wrote the film specifically with her in mind, calling her the gold standard for romantic comedies.

Filming together, however, came with its own challenges. Goldstein recently joked that shooting outdoor scenes in Hoboken became “absolute madness” due to paparazzi swarming every time Lopez stepped outside, adding that if they ever work together again, he’d prefer to keep “everything indoors.”
