Sad news has emerged from the hip-hop community as legendary MC Sparky D has passed away at the age of 61. Born Doreen C. Broadnax, Sparky D was a trailblazer who played a major role in shaping the early days of battle rap.
Her track “Sparky’s Turn (Roxanne You’re Through)” became a defining moment that helped spark the Roxanne Wars, a famous hip-hop rivalry involving Roxanne Shanté. Their rivalry highlighted the competitive spirit of hip-hop, with the two artists even taking the stage wearing boxing gloves during performances.

DJ Premier shared a tribute on social media after learning of Sparky D’s passing. In his message, he reflected on her impact and revealed the deep respect he and Nas had for the pioneering MC.
“One of the 1st Female Battle MC’s representing Brownsville Brooklyn, NY,” Premier wrote on Instagram. “I became an instant fan when she battled @imroxanneshante in the early 80s and I always bought her records from day 1. Her relentless voice and delivery made her an instant force to be reckoned with. I’m blessed to have met her, and I’m glad that Nas and I were able to give her flowers on our new record ‘BOUQUET.’”
