The case against Lil Durk has drawn significant public attention, fueled by online debate, alleged threats connected to the proceedings, and widespread media coverage. With his murder-for-hire trial set to begin next week, prosecutors are reportedly seeking to keep key details out of the public eye.
According to an exclusive report from AllHipHop’s Grouchy Greg Watkins, federal prosecutors asked Judge Michael Fitzgerald during a Thursday (August 13) hearing to seal their witness list. The request comes after reports highlighted by No Jumper on Instagram claimed the prosecution has 35 witnesses prepared to testify, with roughly 20 expected to play a major role in the trial.
The latest development also follows confirmation that several of Lil Durk’s songs will be introduced as evidence. Among the material expected to be presented are the song and music video for “Piss Me Off,” along with lyrics from “Back Again,” “Still Trappin’,” and “Redman.”
Regarding the motion to seal the witness list, prosecutors reportedly did not identify any of the individuals involved or provide a specific safety justification. Instead, they simply requested that the list remain sealed “until further order of the Court.” It remains to be seen whether Judge Fitzgerald will approve the request or decide to make the witness list public before the trial begins.
Federal prosecutors are reportedly seeking to keep the witness list sealed because of threats directed at judges and the court following the Chicago rapper’s 2024 arrest. Those incidents allegedly included threatening voicemails and public remarks. While Lil Durk’s defense team has denied claims that he has threatened or endangered witnesses, investigators reportedly found no evidence linking him to those threats.
Prosecutors also made another serious allegation in court filings. “Evidence collected in this case also shows defendant has allegedly placed monetary bounties to solicit other murders, including a family member of a witness,” they reportedly stated. “Defendant’s modus operandi is clear: he will use his power, his money, his influence, and any pretrial release to endanger anyone who he perceives as a threat, including witnesses in this case.”
If convicted, Lil Durk could face a sentence of life in federal prison. In recent weeks, conflicting reports have also surfaced regarding cellphone evidence expected to be presented at trial, with uncertainty remaining over whether investigators obtained the information they were seeking. Separately, reports indicate the court denied prosecutors’ request for a gag order in the case.
