Young Thug is currently on the road with NAV, ØWAY, and the new generation of YSL, and he took a moment to celebrate a major win during his Friday night (September 11) show in Boston. During the performance, he showed appreciation for his former YSL RICO attorney Brian Steel for also working with Lil Durk on his murder-for-hire case.
A Los Angeles jury recently found Durk not guilty on all counts, and Young Thug used part of his set to recognize Steel’s involvement while celebrating Durk’s acquittal.
“Thank you Brian Steel, Lil Durk on the way home,” he said, as captured by THUGGERDAILY on Twitter. “Lil Durk beat his trial. We got to go up in this b***h.”
However, it is important to clarify that Lil Durk is not heading home just yet. He still has another trial scheduled for October 5, assuming the current schedule remains in place. That case will address racketeering and gun-related charges that were previously separated from the murder-for-hire case, including allegations tied to a 2022 Chicago murder and a 2019 Atlanta shooting.
Before the next trial begins, prosecutors and defense attorneys are expected to debate whether Durk should be granted bond. The Chicago rapper has now spent nearly two years behind bars.
One reason fans paid particular attention to Young Thug’s onstage shout-out was that he appeared to suggest he played a role in Lil Durk’s courtroom victory. “Thank me later,” he tweeted, before following up with two more posts: “Tell smurk to say something if I’m lying #Freesmurkio” and “I didn’t have to pay lol Brian does whatever I say in face asksmurk.”
For those unfamiliar with the connection, Brian Steel joined Lil Durk’s defense team after previously representing Young Thug during his YSL RICO trial. Thug ultimately secured his release under certain conditions.
Meanwhile, Smurk addressed the verdict himself with a grateful message to his fans on Instagram. “Against all odds, we’re stronger together,” he wrote. “Allah doesn’t make mistakes. I feel all the love and positive energy. Now let me be free to help save our kids and bring unity back to our communities. I couldn’t have made it this far without my family, my lawyers, and supporters. [open hands emoji] Freedom. Freedom. Freedom.”
