Dakota Johnson seems to know exactly what her type is. Whether Machine Gun Kelly will become the latest example is still unclear.
Just days after Johnson and MGK fueled dating rumors following a night out in New York City, the actress opened up to Vogue about her history of dating musicians—and made it clear that the experience hasn’t always been simple. While Johnson wasn’t directly asked about MGK, she acknowledged the pattern when the conversation shifted to the musicians in her life.
“They like me. I don’t know what to say,” Johnson said. “And I like them.”
When asked what there was not to like about musicians, Johnson laughed before responding, “A lot! A lot.” She eventually gave an even more colorful description, referring to them as “tricky motherf*ckers.”
Johnson was photographed with MGK in Manhattan on Sept. 11, when the pair reportedly traveled from Taylor Swift’s Tribeca apartment to Estela in the same black SUV.
Neither Johnson nor MGK has confirmed that they’re romantically involved, but a source later told Page Six that the outing wasn’t a “big planned-out romantic night,” describing the pair as simply hanging out, talking and getting to know each other.
Still, the source claimed Johnson and MGK “hit it off” and said “there was definitely chemistry,” adding that their connection was new and MGK was interested in seeing her again.
If Johnson is exploring the musician dating scene once again, she certainly has plenty of experience in that world.
She spent several years in a relationship with Coldplay frontman Chris Martin after they began dating in 2017. Their romance reportedly went through multiple breakups and reconciliations before they ultimately called it quits for good in 2025.
Johnson was later linked to Role Model, whose real name is Tucker Pillsbury, in late 2025. Their relationship lasted less than a year, with reports of their split surfacing in August.
MGK, meanwhile, is also coming off a complicated relationship with Megan Fox. The musician and Fox began dating in 2020, got engaged in 2022 and later split. They welcomed their daughter, Saga, in March 2025 and have remained connected as co-parents.
As recently as March, MGK was still publicly exchanging jokes with his former partner. After Fox returned to Instagram following an extended absence and posted, “I’m alive, new pics just dropped,” MGK commented, “stoked I have your phone number.”
Johnson is also thinking about her future beyond whoever may currently be sitting across from her at dinner. The 36-year-old admitted that her life has “turned out differently” than she imagined while watching friends get married and have children.
“It’s hard,” she said. “But it’s OK. I’m hopeful for that.”
Johnson also revealed that she still hopes to have children, despite not expecting to reach this stage of her life without them. “I really do,” she said. “I didn’t expect to be this age and at this place in my life.”
