Jamie Foxx Reveals Doctors Gave Him Just 5 Percent Chance To Live Through Health Crisis

Jamie Foxx got real on the Golden Globes red carpet Sunday, Jan. 5, telling Variety’s Marc Malkin about his brush with death in 2023 and his path to recovery.

“You dream about the biggest life possible, not tragedy,” Foxx shared. “But when tragedy strikes, you need your loved ones by your side. My daughters Anelise and Corinne – they really stepped up for me.”

When asked about his fear level during the ordeal, Foxx admitted to being “absolutely terrified.” He then shared a powerful interaction with his nurse in Atlanta: “She told me, ‘Jamie, you’re a five-percenter.’ When I asked what that meant, she explained, ‘Less than 5 percent of people with your condition make it out alive. But seeing it was you, I rolled up my sleeves.’ I thanked her, and she shot back, ‘Why are you thanking me? You’re not special – I do this for everyone who comes through those doors.'”

The actor opened up more about his health crisis in his recent Netflix special What Had Happened Was. He revealed that what started as a “terrible headache” turned into a brain bleed and stroke, leaving him unconscious for 20 days.

In the special, Foxx joked about his near-death experience: “I saw the tunnel, but no light. Man, that tunnel was hot though. I started thinking, ‘Am I headed to the wrong place?’ Because I swear I saw the devil at the end like, ‘Come on, n***a.’ Or wait – was that Puffy? Just playing! Though if it was Puffy, he was holding a flaming bottle of Johnson… Nah, I’m just messing around.”

While Foxx was up for Best Performance in Stand-Up Comedy on Television at the Golden Globes, the award ultimately went to Ali Wong for Single Lady.
