Rising star David Jonsson from Rye Lane and Alien: Romulus has landed the main role in Frank Ocean’s first shot at directing.
Variety says shooting’s already kicked off in Mexico City this month with Jonsson in the spotlight. Everything else about the film – from its story to other cast members – is still a mystery. While we don’t know if Ocean wrote it himself, he’s definitely bringing in some serious talent.
Jonsson burst onto the movie scene with 2023’s British feel-good hit Rye Lane, earning rave reviews. He then stole the show in Fede Álvarez’s Alien: Romulus last year, and just wrapped up work on the tense historical drama Bonhoeffer. Next up, he’s booked for the Stephen King flick The Long Walk and Wasteman, where he’s also wearing an executive producer hat.
Word on the street about Ocean directing his first film has been buzzing since 2022. Discussing Film heard from a source that the music star was chatting with A24 and 2AM about distribution. There was talk about Bones and All actress Taylor Russell being involved, but nobody knows if that was ever true or still stands.
Ocean’s been pretty quiet since dropping Blonde back in 2016, though he did release some singles through 2020. But hey, Pharrell hinted last year that Ocean’s got new music cooking.
