Keri Hilson revealed her hesitations about returning to music in a new video series.
The singer shared three videos called We Need To Talk featuring conversations with an alternate version of herself representing her singer persona. In one video, Keri expresses her apprehensions about releasing music again.
“I just don’t want to put my life or my art in the hands of people who don’t give a fuck about me,” she admitted. “The thing is, I don’t fear being human — I love being human in my own hands. I fear being human in their hands.”
Hilson elaborates on her reluctance, making it clear she still wants a place in the industry.
“I want to be back in the game, I want to be at the top,” Hilson continued. “But, I still want to feel like I belong to myself.”
Hilson shares she dislikes the drama, clickbait, and sleep deprivation that come with the industry – but in another video, she reveals how much she misses her musical career.
“I miss singing,” Hilson confesses, to which her singer personality responds, “You’ve been able to act and paint and garden and play with your plants and cook and I’ve been on the bench.”
Hilson’s video series coincides with a now-deleted post where she explained her hiatus from music.
“I just wanted you to know I see & hear your requests, & carefully hold your love & support in my heart,” Hilson wrote. “My truth is, I’d love nothing more than to release this incredible music I’ve been ‘sitting on. There have been so many blockages I have constantly fought myself to not directly speak about.”
After mentioning her personal evolution and loss of important people, Hilson expressed hope that her growth would enhance her music. “I will emerge from this cocoon just as beautifully as I have overcome the other processes in my life that were designed to grow for me!” she wrote.
Hilson hasn’t released a full-length project since No Boys Allowed in 2010.
