Dylan O’Brien’s sibling, Julz O’Brien, has called out the disconnect between their actual relationship and what the actor portrays publicly.
Julz felt compelled to set the record straight after a 2024 interview with Dylan recently resurfaced. In that interview, Dylan had expressed being “grateful” for knowing trans people, including his “nonbinary” sibling Julz, and claimed that having queer people in his life “deepens my experience in this world.”
When Gay Times reshared this interview last week, Julz jumped into the comments section to reveal the truth.
“I’m actually trans masc and go by he/they pronouns,” Julz clarified. “He didn’t check in when I had top surgery […] He didn’t even wish me happy bday last week! But glad I could deepen his experience in this world and make the world love him that much more.”
Julz continued, “Kinda funny that this article didn’t ask me for a single thing about myself? It’s about me and uses my photo. I’m not even tagged.”
Despite their strained relationship, Julz has previously given their younger brother multiple birthday shoutouts, and once referred to Dylan as their “very first best friend.”
The interview that sparked this controversy was connected to Dylan’s role in the queer thriller Ponyboi. During that conversation, Dylan expressed how lucky he felt to gain deeper insight into the queer and trans community while also praising what he learned from co-star River Gallo, who portrayed a gender-nonconforming character in the film.
“This was such an enlightening experience for me,” Dylan said about Gallo. “They are someone that I hold so dearly to me now too that I’ll have with me for the rest of my life as a friend.”
