Mariska Hargitay Breaks Down in Tears After Christopher Meloni’s ‘Organized Crime’ Gets Canceled

The shockwaves from Law & Order: Organized Crime wrapping up after five seasons are still being felt across the franchise—and now Mariska Hargitay is giving fans a closer look at just how emotional things were behind the scenes. The longtime Law & Order: SVU star shared that she “burst out in tears” after watching Christopher Meloni respond to the show’s cancellation.

Hargitay said the reaction was immediate. “I saw it and burst out in tears, first of all,” she told People while reflecting on Meloni’s heartfelt message to fans after the news broke.

She highlighted the emotional weight of the journey, describing it as “so beautiful and intimate,” while stressing how deeply the show had become part of his life.

For Mariska Hargitay, the cancellation went beyond just a network decision—it signaled the end of something profoundly meaningful they had built together.

Hargitay and Christopher Meloni have shared a long on-screen history dating back to 1999, when their characters—Olivia Benson and Elliot Stabler—emerged as the emotional core of Law & Order: SVU.

Over time, their chemistry has grown into one of TV’s most iconic partnerships, keeping fans invested for decades. Supporters—often known as Bensler or EO shippers—have continued to root for Benson and Stabler to finally become a couple, even after Meloni’s initial departure from SVU in 2011.

Meloni reflected on that legacy in his own farewell message. “I just saw that they announced OC… won’t be coming back,” he said in a video, thanking fans who “helped give the character of Elliot Stabler life and longevity.”

Holding back emotion, he added, “Good ride… I had a great time playing him,” giving credit to the audience for keeping the character alive for more than two decades across the franchise.

The cancellation, confirmed April 16, officially brings Law & Order: Organized Crime to a close after five seasons, which began in 2021. The series marked Meloni’s return to the franchise, following Stabler’s transition into an NYPD unit focused on long-term criminal operations.

It ran for four seasons on NBC before moving to Peacock for its fifth and final season.

Even though the show has ended, the possibility of a Bensler reunion isn’t completely off the table. Hargitay hinted that the characters could meet again, saying, “Somehow, some way, yes,” while also pointing out that their real-life bond remains as strong as ever.
