Young M.A had Shannon Sharpe scratching his head after explaining that she prefers dating straight women, while also making it clear she doesn’t believe she’s “turning” them gay.
The 34-year-old rapper recently stopped by the Club Shay Shay podcast ahead of the release of her upcoming album KWEEN.
Around the one-hour mark of the interview, M.A and Sharpe got into an interesting discussion about relationships, attraction, and the dynamics between women.
When Sharpe asked the “OOOUUU” artist what her favorite feature on a woman was, she replied, “[Their] eyes because you see they soul. Of course, you got to still be a beautiful woman that got yourself together—but the eyes is what pulls me in first.”
She then added, “You know why I say it’s the eyes? Cuz that’s how I would know if a girl is attracted to me, because most women I’ve dated was straight.”
That comment instantly caught Sharpe’s attention, prompting him to ask, “You flipped them?”
M.A quickly pushed back on that idea, saying, “I wouldn’t say flip. See, a lot of people get that misconstrued. Women that I end up dating don’t mean they [are] just gay—no. They still like men, they just attracted to me and that’s it. After me they move back on to men, that’s it.”
Sharpe then tried to better understand her perspective by asking, “So it’s not a situation they need to be gay or they need to be straight, or X Y and Z?”
“Nah. I prefer straight,” M.A answered, leaving Sharpe visibly surprised.
Still confused, Sharpe followed up with, “Hold on, if they straight—they’ve never been with a woman.”
“I’m a different type of person though,” M.A explained. “I’m not like [the] ‘gay rapper-ish’ type, you know? I’m just me that loves women.”
In this context, “flipping” refers to the idea that someone can “turn” another person gay. However, organizations like Planned Parenthood have stated that sexual orientation is not a choice and research suggests it is influenced partly by biological factors before birth.
Young M.A’s new album KWEEN is set to arrive on Friday, May 29.
