Nick Reiner Claims Trustee Is Withholding $1.5 Million From Family Trust Ahead of Double Murder Trial

Nick Reiner is now facing legal challenges on multiple fronts.

According to Fox 11, the 32-year-old son of late filmmaker and actor Rob Reiner has filed a petition in the Los Angeles County Probate Court requesting the immediate release of at least $1.5 million from a family trust established by his parents decades ago.

Court documents reportedly state that Reiner believes funds designated for him under the trust’s terms have been wrongfully withheld. He argues that the money is urgently needed to cover his legal expenses as he prepares to defend himself against charges connected to the deaths of Rob Reiner and Michele Singer Reiner.

The dispute revolves around a separate trust established for Nick Reiner in 1993. According to his legal team, the trust outlined mandatory distributions at certain ages, including a payment when he turned 30 and the release of the remaining funds at age 35. Reiner, now 32, claims he never received the initial distribution and alleges that trustee Paul R. Kanin has continued to withhold the funds despite what his attorneys describe as clear instructions within the trust documents.

Court filings state that the trust contains at least $1.5 million in assets, although Reiner’s lawyers argue they have yet to receive a full accounting of its total value. The petition further claims that questions surrounding Reiner’s competence have been used to delay distributions, even though the trust allegedly mandates those payments.

The request is closely tied to Reiner’s efforts to secure the services of high-profile defense attorney Alan Jackson. Jackson represented Reiner following his arrest but later stepped away from the case. In a declaration submitted with the petition, Jackson stated that his firm is “ready, willing, and able to resume representation of Mr. Reiner” if sufficient funding becomes available.

The trust battle comes in the wake of a case that sent shockwaves through Hollywood. On December 14, 2025, Rob Reiner and Michele Singer Reiner were found dead inside their Brentwood home. Authorities later charged Nick Reiner with two counts of murder with special circumstances in connection with the deaths. He has pleaded not guilty.

The tragedy stunned the entertainment world and fans of Rob Reiner, whose career spanned decades, from his breakout role as Michael “Meathead” Stivic on All in the Family to directing acclaimed films such as This Is Spinal Tap, Stand by Me, The Princess Bride, When Harry Met Sally…, Misery, and A Few Good Men.

Michele Singer Reiner, a respected producer and philanthropist, had been married to Rob Reiner since 1989.

Since the arrests, few details about the case have been made public. Investigators have not disclosed a possible motive, while court orders have kept autopsy findings sealed.

Previous reports also noted that Nick Reiner faced struggles with addiction and homelessness during his teenage years and early adulthood. He later spoke openly about those experiences while promoting Being Charlie, the semi-autobiographical movie he co-wrote.
