Cardi B remains embroiled in a legal dispute with a Jane Doe plaintiff over a July 29, 2023, incident at Drai’s Beachclub in Las Vegas. As previously reported, the rapper allegedly threw a microphone that struck the woman, who claims the incident caused both physical injuries and emotional distress.
The lawsuit is now moving forward, but Cardi recently secured a small legal victory. Ahead of the discovery phase, the rapper filed a contribution claim, arguing that her actions were justified under the circumstances. In essence, Cardi’s legal team is asserting that she acted in self-defense.
Jane Doe sought to have those contribution claims dismissed, filing a motion to remove them from the case. However, Judge Bita Yeager declined to do so at this stage, giving Cardi a temporary win.
The judge did not rule on whether the contribution defense is ultimately valid. Instead, she determined that there is currently insufficient information available to make that decision. As a result, the claim will remain in the case while both sides proceed through discovery.
Once the discovery process is completed and more evidence has been reviewed, Judge Yeager will be in a better position to decide whether contribution can legitimately serve as a defense in the lawsuit.
According to the lawsuit, the incident occurred during Cardi B’s 2023 performance at Drai’s Beachclub, where the rapper had encouraged fans to throw water and ice toward the stage to help her cool off in the heat. Jane Doe claims she was simply following those instructions when she tossed a drink in Cardi’s direction, only to be struck in the face by a microphone moments later.
Cardi B, however, has offered a different version of events. While she admits she initially asked the crowd for help cooling down, she argues that Jane Doe continued splashing her long after it was necessary. According to the rapper, she no longer wanted or needed the assistance by the time the incident occurred, and she reacted after being hit with ice—an action her legal team contends amounted to self-defense.
Although Cardi has secured a small procedural win in court, the legal battle is still in its early stages. With discovery now underway, both sides will continue gathering evidence before the court determines whether Cardi’s defense can move forward. More developments are expected as the case progresses.
