Missy Elliott Set to Headline a Heartfelt Aaliyah Tribute at Essence Fest 2026

Essence Fest is set to deliver another unforgettable moment in its 2026 lineup with a special tribute honoring the life and legacy of Aaliyah, led by one of her closest musical collaborators, Missy Elliott.

Festival organizers confirmed to local CBS affiliate WWLTV that the Grammy-winning icon will curate a one-of-a-kind performance on the festival’s closing night in New Orleans. The tribute will celebrate the 30th anniversary of One in a Million as well as the 25th anniversary of Aaliyah’s self-titled final studio album.

The performance is scheduled for July 5 at the Caesars Superdome and will be held with the support and approval of Aaliyah’s mother, Diane Haughton, and her brother, Rashad Haughton.

Before they became legendary figures in music, Missy Elliott and producer Timbaland helped transform modern R&B through their groundbreaking work with Aaliyah. Elliott co-wrote and co-produced several of the late singer’s biggest hits, including “One in a Million,” “Hot Like Fire,” and “Best Friends,” and often referred to Aaliyah as her “little sister.” Their bond stretched far beyond music, evolving into one of the most influential creative partnerships of the late 1990s.

Nearly 25 years after her passing in 2001, Aaliyah’s impact on music remains undeniable. Her innovative mix of R&B, hip-hop, and electronic sounds reshaped the genre, while her effortless style inspired generations of artists. Over the years, Elliott has continued to celebrate Aaliyah’s legacy through heartfelt tributes and reflections on their close friendship.

The newly announced tribute further strengthens an already star-studded Essence Fest 2026 lineup. Friday’s schedule features performances from Cardi B, Latto, Kehlani, SZN4, along with a live appearance by former First Lady Michelle Obama.

Saturday will spotlight R&B favorites, including Patti LaBelle, Brandy, Monica, Josh Levi, and Leon Thomas. Sunday’s lineup includes Babyface, Public Enemy, George Clinton & Friends, and Doug E. Fresh before the highly anticipated Aaliyah tribute closes out the festival.

This year’s Essence Fest is also the first to be overseen by Teyana Taylor, who was named the festival’s chief curator earlier this year. Ahead of the event, Taylor emphasized that her goal isn’t to overhaul the festival but to restore the atmosphere longtime fans have come to love.

“We didn’t come here to change nothing,” Taylor said. “We’re coming here to elevate and add.”

She also shared that she wants the festival to “feel like home again,” promising expanded activations, fresh cultural experiences, and a renewed commitment to giving attendees “a whole experience.”
