Whitney Houston has officially received her own Barbie doll, fulfilling a vision that was two decades in the making.
According to People, Mattel introduced its first-ever Whitney Houston Barbie over the weekend, launching the doll on August 9, the date that would have marked the iconic singer’s 63rd birthday. The Barbie Signature Whitney Houston Doll pays tribute to Houston’s unforgettable appearance in the 1987 music video for “I Wanna Dance with Somebody (Who Loves Me),” featuring her signature purple mini dress, vibrant earrings, dramatic makeup, and a microphone stand inspired by the legendary performance.
However, according to Whitney Houston’s sister-in-law Pat Houston, who serves as executor of the Estate of Whitney E. Houston, the idea for the doll actually started with Whitney herself more than two decades ago.
“Whitney had never really endorsed anything, and we started having conversations about her brand … we talked about a Mattel doll 20 years ago,” Pat told People.
Whitney initially imagined a doll inspired by her 1992 blockbuster film The Bodyguard and its record-breaking soundtrack. Although that version never came to life, Pat revealed that Whitney “really wanted to invest the time in doing a doll.”
Years later, the estate and Mattel chose to celebrate another unforgettable chapter of Houston’s career. Her 1987 hit “I Wanna Dance with Somebody” became a No. 1 smash and remains one of her most recognizable songs. Pat described the decision to recreate the music video look as a “no-brainer,” while Mattel carefully recreated every element, “down to the earrings, to the color of the hair, to the color of the dress, to the details on the shoes.”
“I’m just really happy that we’re seeing this doll come to fruition, and it’s going to be a lasting influence across generations,” Pat said. “I’m just honored to be in this place at this time, and we’re actually doing it.”
The Barbie’s release comes during a major year of celebrations surrounding Houston’s legacy. In 2026, the singer is being honored for 40 years of influence, including a Recording Academy Special Merit Lifetime Achievement Award and recognition from the New Jersey Hall of Fame.
Houston’s estate has also teamed up with Julien’s Auctions for an August 11 charity auction featuring items from her personal archives, including stage-worn Versace and Dolce & Gabbana outfits, a Bob Mackie jacket, and an RIAA-certified 9x Platinum award for “I Wanna Dance with Somebody.”
The doll was officially unveiled at the Whitney E. Houston Legacy Foundation’s fifth annual Legacy of Love Gala in Atlanta on August 8, just one day before what would have been Houston’s birthday. Proceeds from the foundation support scholarships and community programs.
For Pat, the Barbie holds special meaning because it represents something Whitney herself once hoped to create. “Her songs, they define generations, they’ve broken records. She’s touched hearts,” she said, describing the doll as “a fitting celebration of her extraordinary legacy.”
